What does Rishi Sunak mean for your money?

Rishi Sunak becomes Britain’s third prime minister in seven weeks. The former prime minister took the top job after rival Penny Mordout dropped out of his run for Tory leadership earlier this week.

The new prime minister has pledged to “correct” the “mistakes” of his predecessor, Liz Truss, who resigned after a turbulent 44 days in power.

In his maiden speech outside 10 Downing Street, Rishi Sunak admitted the country was in a “serious economic crisis” and that “difficult decisions” would be necessary to restore stability.

Markets reacted positively to Sunak’s appointment as Prime Minister; GBP/USD strengthened as borrowing costs fell.

But what does his appointment and his new cabinet mean for your money?

When did the first budget under Rishi Sunak happen?

The autumn budget was due to be released at the end of November, but that timetable was disrupted when Liz Truss’ first finance minister, Kwasi Kwarteng, presented his so-called mini-budget at the end of September.

The resulting market turmoil has forced a rethink. The new budget date was brought forward to the end of October.

However, the announcement has now been pushed back again to November 17 to ensure it reflects the most accurate economic forecast.

It will be delivered by Jeremy Hunt, who replaced Kwarteng after resigning amid small-budget chaos.

What happened to our taxes?

Hunt, a former contender for the Conservative leadership, retained his position when Rishi Sunak took over the top job.

The Chancellor promised that “protecting vulnerable people – as well as people’s jobs, mortgages and bills – will be our top priority as we work to restore stability, confidence and long-term growth”.

He also said tough decisions must be made to restore order to the economy, likely related to taxation and public spending.

Rishi Sunak raised National Insurance premiums by 1.25 per cent, a practice that Liz Truss scrapped shortly after she took office to raise money. But it seems unlikely he will turn around on the issue.

In his initial leadership campaign in the summer after Boris Johnson resigned, Sunak also pledged to reduce the basic rate of income tax from 20% to 16%. However, that now seems unlikely given that he has a huge hole in the government’s coffers to plug.

Instead, the government appears to be trying to raise money by freezing tax brackets and thresholds, pushing people into higher tax brackets as wages rise.

Will Rishi Sunak remove the pension triple lock?

In its 2019 manifesto, the Conservative Party pledged to maintain a triple lock-in of state pensions, guaranteeing that the state pension will follow inflation, wage growth or 2.5%, whichever is higher.

But with inflation currently at 10.1%, that commitment could become too expensive to maintain. Sources have confirmed that pensions are being considered ahead of the release of the new financial statements.

Liz Truss has promised triple locks will be safe in her final weeks in office, but the Sunak government has yet to make the same promise.

The policy exchange think tank, where Sunak worked before becoming a member of parliament, encouraged the government to drop the measure and instead raise pensions based on income.

What happened to mortgage rates?

For the first time since the 2008 financial crisis, the average rate on two-year and five-year mortgage rates exceeded 6%. Interest rates rose from 4.5% to more than 6% in a matter of days after the small budget announcement pushed up government borrowing costs.

The Bank of England is widely expected to raise interest rates again at its Nov. 3 meeting, which will have an impact on mortgage rates.

However, expectations for further rate hikes have moderated since Rishi Sunak took over from Lizz Truss.

Analysts now expect the ratio to climb to 5% in the coming months, down from an earlier forecast of 5.25%. That could mean the impact on mortgage rates is less severe than previously expected, thanks in part to Sunak’s reputation as a fiscally responsible politician.

Will benefit claimants get a boost?

When he was prime minister, Rishi Sunak committed to raising welfare in line with inflation. However, Truss is considering a 6% increase despite calls from MPs to raise it by 10.1%.

With the 10.1% increase, the current standard allowance for single claimants over 25 will increase by £33.82 to £368.73 a month.

He seems likely to stick to his promises as chancellor and boost universal credit and other benefits by almost 10.1 per cent from April next year.
