Lisbon, Portugal, November 2, 2022, Chainwire — The newly formed member-led coalition will support the growth of Web3 domains and work to combat bad actors, cybersquatting and domain conflicts in Web3.

Today, the Web3 Domain Consortium is established—a new consortium aimed at promoting technological advancement and interoperability among Web3 domain registries and improving the Web3 user experience. The alliance will seek to prevent malicious phishing attacks, bad actors impersonating Web3 “top-level domains” (W3TLDs), cybersquatting, and Web3 domain conflicts.Member-led panels include leading blockchain and Web3 named players including unstoppable field (.crypto, .nft, .x, .wallet, .bitcoin, .dao, .888, .zil and .blockchain), Bonfidel (.sol), Tezos domain (.tez), Polkadot name system (.point), ivy (.hbar), system currency (.sys) and klaytn.domains (.klay) together provide protection for Web3 domain names. This cross-chain consortium includes the naming systems of the Polygon, Ethereum, Solana, Tezos, Polkadot, Hedera and Klayton blockchains.

While traditional Web2 domain names are organized by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the US non-profit organization responsible for coordinating the namespace database, there is no such governing body or consortium in Web3. Web3 domains, such as sandy.nft, nate.hbar, or sarah.sol, provide the infrastructure that allows people to have their Web3 identities and data on the Internet. As the demand for Web3 domains proliferates, there is still no fixed industry standard to prevent issues such as fraud or naming collisions within Web3. In addition to working with Web3 industry stakeholders to develop these standards, the Web3 Domain Alliance aims to actively participate in discussions with ICANN to increase ICANN’s awareness and recognition of W3TLDs.

Web3 domains are an important part of a person’s Web3 digital identity. Among other things, it can be used to send and receive cryptocurrencies in place of lengthy alphanumeric wallet addresses, providing holders with easy-to-read Web3 domains such as sandy.nft. Web3 domains can also be used for website hosting, secure email forwarding, and as a single sign-on method for many applications, games, metaverses, and more. Web3 domains are minted on the blockchain and stored in the user’s wallet, putting more control in the hands of the owner.

Companies also recognize the advantages of using branded W3TLDs, such as “.blockchain” or “.klever,” and the Web3 Domain Alliance is committed to collaborating on ways to protect their intellectual property and protect users, so that they can work with their best partners in Web3. Favorite brands interact with confidence.

The Web3 Domain Alliance works to standardize and protect existing and future Web3 domain names and prevent bad actors from introducing naming collisions that make it difficult for users to navigate this new technology and trust the people they interact with. Among other initiatives, the Web3 Domain Alliance will work to harmonize the intellectual property rights of all Web3 naming services and how best to avoid consumer harm.

Members of the Web3 Domain Alliance will work together to advance the Web3 naming industry. They will also commit to educate consumers, regulators, and industry participants about the uniqueness, technological innovation, and usefulness of Web3 domains, and advocate for sound governance of Web3 naming services by browsers, technology partners, Web2 companies, and other stakeholders and recognition.

“As a member of the Web3 Domains Alliance, we are committed to helping protect people’s Web3 identities and ensuring that Web3 adheres to the best possible global standards and practices,” said Sandy Carter, senior vice president and director of channels at Unstoppable Domains. “We’re still in the dial-up phase of Web3, and many people are still trying to understand the space. This alliance is critical to supporting the growth of our space so people can explore Web3 safely and securely.”

“We believe that coalitions of this nature are important to protect future domain names. In this industry, we have a responsibility to create a secure Web3 environment to ensure widespread adoption. The Web3 Domain Alliance aims to preserve the integrity of the industry and work together against possible Malicious activity that threatens our industry,” bonfida.sol said.

“As part of the Web3 Domain Alliance, Tezos Domains will leverage its proven technology and expertise to help coordinate and regulate the rapidly growing Web3 domain space and engage the global Web3 enthusiasts in a healthy and fair ecosystem,” Founder Andrew Paulicek added Tezos Domain.

“Web3 is based on the principles of decentralization, inclusivity and fairness, so organizations like the Web3 Domain Alliance are essential if we want to unlock its full potential while ensuring users can enjoy the most seamless and engaging multi-chain experience possible. Important,” explained Ryan Ye, co-founder of PNS (Polkadot Naming Service).

“The need for a Web3 Domain Federation reflects the importance of community in everything we do. Providers can and should collaborate to avoid confusion and confusion in domains. This will allow us to have a truly global, inclusive network where users can control their identities. This helps connect us all,” said Nate Western, co-founder of pieFi and the hashed name service (on Hedera) and head of Web3.
