Double Your Gift to Qtalk to Help More Gay Nigerians Get Mental Health Counseling – Eliminating 76 Crimes

Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday

Support our fight for LGBTQ rights abroad and double our donation to help more gay Nigerians access mental health counseling.

The Qtalk app for Android phones helps thousands of LGBTQ Nigerians. Now is the time to expand its reach to iPhone users. This will cost $1,800 for programming and related expenses. A generous donor agrees to match donations 1-1.

The fundraiser raised a total of $3,600, including $1,800 for iPhone extensions and subsidized data costs for web hosting, application maintenance, and Qtalk consultants who work pro bono.

Please donate.

You can help by:

  • $26 pays for a month of mobile data for a Qtalk consultant
  • $34 for a month of Qtalk web hosting
  • $132 pays for a month of mobile data for five Qtalk consultants
  • $900 is used to cover the 50% upfront payment required before application developers start developing Qtalk for iPhone

The São Paulo Foundation for International Reconciliation sponsors the project and continues to support LGBTQ rights advocacy journalism.

Qtalk is a life-saving program for desperate LGBTIQ+ community members. This is a counseling service that allows LGBTIQ+ Nigerians to securely access legal and psychosocial support for free via their mobile phone.

It’s currently only available on Android phones, making it inaccessible to the growing number of LGBTIQ+ Nigerians who use iPhones. Meeting our fundraising goals will allow us to improve Qtalk and expand its capabilities to serve iPhone users.

The app was developed in 2019 by NoStringsNG, a Nigerian LGBTIQ+ media advocacy organization supported by the São Paulo International Reconciliation Foundation.

Currently, the app has approximately 2,500 registered users, including 2,000 who use the app on a daily basis.

Consultation services are provided free of charge by pro bono counselors of qualified legal and health professionals.

Since its launch, the app has helped many LGBTIQ+ Nigerians cope with the challenges they face. With our users’ permission, we publish monthly articles highlighting the issues LGBTIQ+ Nigerians face and the counselors’ advice to them on Qtalk.

Earlier this year, as part of our effort to gauge the app’s impact, we collected responses from a number of counselors who shared their experiences using the app.

Here’s the response from Pamela, who works as a Qtalk consultant for free:

“Working to support the LGBTIQ+ community in Nigeria has always been a passion of mine.

“Connecting and staying in touch with like-minded people is healing in itself. For marginalized communities, platforms such as Qtalk can be therapeutic. This is not only timely but much needed. Thanks to everyone responsible for such a fantastic program .

“One of the most important meetings for me was helping a gay man cope with the loss of his dear son. For me, it was something I could empathize with because I also lost a very close and I know how grief can destroy a person if not handled properly.”

Qtalk also helped spark conversations in various national and international media on issues such as mental health and homophobia in Nigeria.

Mike Daemon, founder of NoStringsNG, observed that despite the app’s impressive progress and positive response, improvements are still needed to remove some of Qtalk’s limitations:

“As the iPhone has grown in popularity in Nigeria, the demand for the app to be available on the iPhone’s IOS platform has grown. Creating an iPhone version of Qtalk will allow us to reach more members of the Nigerian LGBTIQ+ community and accommodate New advisors for Android are not currently being used.

“We also wanted to improve the overall user experience of the Android app to provide a seamless and bug-free experience.

“After consulting with experts and an app development company, we estimated the total cost of developing the IOS app and new features of the current Android app at $1,800. This would cover improvements in security, UI/UX design, server development, and hosting .”
